What would have been a more appropriate response to this?

you didn't say anything wrong--she was just looking for a particular response and didn't get it. she is really immature and hasn't learned much thru her ordeal.. I wonder why she expected such a dramatic reaction....when you weren't close at all??? very odd really---and I wouldn't worry about it.
