What does this quote mean?

When you give of yourself to others, whether because asked, or freely, it is usually accompanied by a sense of joy. When you give to others and they don't accept it or deny it completely, it hurts. But if you continue to love that person and give of yourself to them you are loving until it hurts. When and if they finally accept the love you give, then the feeling of hurt is replaced by joy.
